The Guelph Marlin Aquatic Club is teaming up with the University of Guelph and Centennial high school to get as many people as they can to learn to swim.

The university and Centennial pools will be among the many pools hosting the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson on June 18. The initiative was started in the U.S. to send a message that drowning deaths are preventable and to educate people on where and how to learn to swim, Marlins coach Kendra Burton said in an email.

The event aims to get the world involved to set a world record, she said.

“We will be doing a 30-minute lesson and then submitting the numbers to be counted for the world record,” she said. “All instructors and participants count.”

Anyone interested in taking part is asked to email coachkendra@rogers.com or bfisher@uoguelph.ca. More info is also available at worldslargestswimminglesson.org.

A new book about 150 years of history of the Ontario Veterinary College is being released this weekend, which is Alumni Weekend at the University of Guelph.

A new book about 150 years of history of the Ontario Veterinary College is being released this weekend, which is Alumni Weekend at the University of Guelph.

Milestones: 150 Years of the Ontario Veterinary College includes photos and details from the opening of the first veterinary college in Canada and the United States to today’s OVC, a news release said. The book will be available for purchase during Alumni Weekend, and later on Amazon.com.

Co-authors Lisa Cox, a PhD history candidate, and OVC associate dean Peter Conlon dug through the university archives and interviewed former faculty and donors to find the 150 most interesting stories, the release said.

“I think the biggest challenge when creating a book like this is to determine the balance between historical and modern,” Cox said in the release.

This is the second book about the OVC’s history. The first, written for the 100-year anniversary, had very few images, while the new book has many more.

The university’s Alumni Weekend includes campus tours, the U of G Alumni Association annual general meeting, the President’s Lunch, the Milestone Reception & Dinner, Alumni Pub, and more.

The university’s Class of 1963 will be honoured, with all 50th reunion classes invited to the President’s Lunch. All graduates of the Class of 1988, who graduated 25 years ago, will be honoured at the Milestone Reception and Dinner, and they’ll be able to finish off the night with a “Lost in the ’80s Pub Night” at The Brass Taps.

New this year is a hospitality tent located in front of the W. F. Mitchell Athletic Centre.

Local microbrewers are getting ready to celebrate Father’s Day with a craft beer bus tour of Guelph.

Local microbrewers are getting ready to celebrate Father’s Day with a craft beer bus tour of Guelph.

The second annual Father’s Day Ale Trail, on Sunday June 16 from noon to 5 p.m., includes stops at Wellington Brewery, F&M Brewery and The Woolwich Arrow, a news release said.

It will be a chance for beer lovers to meet the brewmasters and sample year-round offerings, as well as exclusive “one-off” beers, the release said.

These small-batch offerings include a Sour Cherry Brown Ale, Shangri-La (an American-style India Pale Ale) and Pan Ontario Ale (a barrel-aged blend of five Ontario craft beers).

They also include a collaboration beer made by the brewmasters at Wellington Brewery and F&M brewery that uses locally grown hops from Guelph’s Ignatius Farm.

The Father’s Day event marks the start of Ontario Craft Beer Week, a week-long celebration of locally produced craft beer.

Ontario Craft Beer Week is “a chance for craft brewers and beer lovers to get together and celebrate the great beer produced here in Ontario by local independently owned breweries,” Wellington Brewery vice-president Brent Davies said in the release.

Tickets for the Father’s Day Ale Trail include samples at each spot and busing between locations.
