Birds of a feather

Mike Craig, who rents out hens and chicken coops for urban backyards, holds one of his heritage hens Saturday. Craig and his wife, Mary-Kate Gilbertson, are Guelph residents who have run Backyard Bok Boks for a couple of years. For the first time, they’re promoting an unusual last-minute Christmas gift idea – two-week chicken rentals for next summer. The gift includes three heritage hens and all the gear needed to try out backyard farming. They have 20 hens in their own backyard, with 40 more being cared for over the winter by a farmer. The business can be reached at BackyardBokBoks.com.
