Centennial Collegiate selling rain barrels

The Social Responsibility Council of students at Centennial Collegiate is taking orders for rain barrels it will sell on Earth Day, April 22.
Proceeds from the 5-8 p.m. fundraising event, now in its third year, will go towards improving Centennial’s recycling system, a news release said.
Currently, over half of the paper waste produced at the school and two-thirds of the containers used by students are going to the landfill, rather than being recycled, the release said. To change this, students on the Social Responsibility Council plan to build carts with three separate containers for each waste type – compost, recycling and garbage. “The hope is that with a more convenient waste collection system, students at the school will make better waste management choices,” it said.
The rain barrels being sold were once used to transport fruits and vegetables, but have been repurposed and offer years of reliable service as rain barrels, it said.
Orders must be placed in advance of the sale, either online at or by calling 519-821-0360, ext. 335.
Rain barrels capture and store chlorine-free and fluoride-free rainwater from a home’s downspouts, which can be used for watering flowers, vegetables, lawns, shrubs and trees.
