Cleanup sign-up deadline Thursday

City hall is hoping hundreds of local residents will volunteer to be part of the city’s 11th annual community cleanup, which takes place on Saturday April 26, rain or shine.
Registration is open until April 17 for the event, which will see groups of volunteers collecting litter in parks, woodlots, intersections and boulevards in nearly 100 locations that have been identified as being in need of a cleanup. The Clean and Green Community Clean-up goes from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., including a volunteer appreciation barbecue at Riverside Park.
This volunteer community beautification initiative has removed a total of 29,500 kilograms of litter from the city during its first 10 years, a news release said.
The event has grown in popularity over the years.
Last year, 954 volunteers cleaned 94 locations and collected over 3,600 kilograms of litter, although freezing temperatures and snow meant participation was down from 2012, the release said.
The event includes pre-registration of volunteers in order to coordinate sites, supplies and waste collection. Registration is at www.guelph.ca or by phoning 519-837-5628.
Volunteers will be asked to choose a cleanup location from a list of predetermined sites to ensure key areas are cleaned up. The city will provide same-day curbside collection of litter .
Sponsors of this year’s event include:
• Tim Hortons will provide in-store advertising as well as gloves, reusable travel mugs, barbecue products and draw prizes
• M&M Meats will provide the food for the barbecue at a discounted cost
• Bag Ladies, also known as AI-Pack Enterprises Ltd., a local Guelph company, will provide coloured garbage bags
• the Guelph and Wellington Development Association and Terra-View Homes will both contribute towards the cost of the barbecue
• the Zehrs on Imperial Road will also provide food for the barbecue
• the Guelph Downtown Business Association will provide draw prizes.
