College Royal president Amanda Farrar sews a patch onto the pants of vice-president of events Josephine Verhallen during a trouser patching competition last Friday night at the University of Guelph’s Peter Clark Hall. The contest saw participants get five minutes to stitch a patch on another’s pants, and the audience judged who did best.

College Royal events continue with full lineup

All the family favourites, including livestock shows, logging competitions, the Junior Tractor Rodeo, Teddy Bear Surgery and more, will be part of this year’s College Royal open house at the University of Guelph on March 16 and 17.
The theme of this year’s celebration – the 89th in the event’s history – is “Welcome to Royal Country.” The theme encourages visitors to enjoy the traditions they have come to know and love, but also to see the new and exciting things happening at the university, a news release said.
“We are excited to have an incredible variety of events and fun activities for the whole family, future students and those graduates looking to return,” associate vice president of public relations Mike Whiteside said in the release.
“The thousands of student volunteers have already begun to prepare an amazing open house to show off how great our community really is.”
College Royal is the largest student-run university open house of its kind in North America, and each March it attracts more than 30,000 visitors to campus, the release said.
The free event includes campus tours, dog and cat shows, a photography show, various competitions and even a chance to sample some milkshakes at the Food Science department, to name just a few of the things on offer. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
