Crowning achievement

Local teen Jasmine Herrera returned home looking a little more like royalty after being named first runner-up in the provincial contest for the Miss Teen Canada pageant.
“I love my new crown!” said Herrera, 17, in an enthusiastic email to the Tribune announcing her win.
While it’s not a first-place finish, the role of first runner-up to Miss Teen Ontario puts her in contention for the national pageant, taking place in Toronto in July. Herrera is one of 18 girls from Ontario who will move on to the next round. “All of my hard work, focus and practice really paid off,” she said.
The experience was well worth it, she said.
“It truly felt like I was living the dream. I made so many new friends, and all the girls were so much fun to be around. I truly felt like I grew as a person over the weekend,” she said.
Herrera’s next step will be to start preparing for the national pageant, starting with looking for local companies to sponsor her effort.
She will also be planning some fundraisers for Free The Children, the official charity of the Miss Teen Canada World pageant.
“I would love to bring the entire community of Guelph together to help me out in raising the most money and helping me excel in this once in a lifetime experience,” she said.
