Deadline for amazing racers

For those adventurous types who are up for a challenge, the Southern Ontario Amazing Race is now accepting applications from racers for its 2014 event.
The race, known as SOAR, is a clue-based adventure race similar to the one featured on the Amazing Race TV show, except racers travel across southern Ontario in an intense, weekend-long event that raises money for the Children’s Foundation of Guelph Wellington.
Racers have until Feb. 15 to submit their written applications, as well as videos describing why they should be included in the race, as spaces are limited.
The event is the Children’s Foundation’s single largest fundraiser. In its 10th anniversary year in 2013 – a special race year including all-star participants, – it raised an unprecedented $144,000, the release said.
The funds were used to provide assistance for children in financial need to take part in sports, cultural and recreational activities.
“In 2004, less than 100 children were receiving financial assistance, and in 2013 over 1,000 were helped,” foundation executive director Glenna Banda said in the release. The foundation is hoping to maintain some of the momentum from last year’s all-star race and raise at least $75,000 this year, she said.
