A local doctor has been recognized for his work in Guyana, South America, by a U.K.-base medical journal.
Brian Ostrow recently received a 2013 Journal of Wound Care Award for best research from a developing country for his work on the Guyana Diabetes and Footcare Project.
News of the award was shared locally on The Bookshelf’s blog, where a video of Ostrow’s acceptance speech was posted.
“Our project is a true collaboration to improve diabetes care in Guyana, South America,” Ostrow said, going on to name several major contributors to the project, including the Canadian Association of General Surgeons and the Ministry of Health in Guyana.
Ostrow has led a research team that has worked with local health care professionals and has managed to reduce the number of diabetes-related leg amputations in Guyana by more than 50 per cent, the blog said.
“Practising evidence-informed health care in a resource-poor setting is extremely challenging,” said Ostrow in his speech. “I want to salute all the health care professionals working in difficult conditions.”
