Holiday means low blood count

It may be a long weekend coming up, but the need for blood donations doesn’t take a holiday. That’s the message from the local blood donor clinic, which wants people to remember to give blood this Easter weekend.
With many people away or busy with family activities, blood donations tend to decrease during the holiday. So Canadian Blood Services is asking people to book appointments to donate blood leading up to, during and immediately after the long weekend to ensure a strong supply for patients, a news release said.
On average, someone in Canada needs blood or blood products every 60 seconds, it said.
It can take as many as 50 donors to help just one car-crash victim, and it can take up to five donors to help someone undergoing cancer treatment, it said.
Guelph’s permanent blood donor clinic will be open this long weekend on Saturday April 19 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and on Monday April 21 from 4 to 8 p.m.
