Air-conditioned city facilities, including community centres and libraries, as well as the city’s new Market Square water feature, are great places to beat the heat, a city hall news release said.

How to beat the heat

The city is reminding residents of all the places available to help them keep cool in the wake of hot-weather warnings from Environment Canada.
Environment Canada has issued a humidex advisory for an area that includes Waterloo-Wellington and Dufferin-Innisfil.
Temperatures are forecast to rise into the low to mid thirties today, and elevated humidity levels will combine with the high temperatures to give humidex values of 40 C or higher, it said. The hot and humid conditions are expected to continue through Thursday, with humidex values forecast to reach or exceed 40 each day.
The city is not expected to get much relief at night, as temperatures are not expected to drop below 22 C in many areas, the advisory said.

During a heat alert, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public health advises people to:
•    Stay out of the sun;
•    Drink lots of water;
•    Limit outdoor activity to morning and evening hours;
•    Stay in air-conditioned places.
Seniors and young children are particularly at risk during heat and smog-related weather conditions, the release said.
Residents are encouraged to call or visit family, friends and neighbours – especially isolated adults and seniors who are at greater risk of suffering from heat-related illnesses, it said.

The heat and humidity are expected to break by Friday with the passage of a cold front.
