Artist Graeme Sheffield of The Ironwood Anvil holds one of the pieces he’ll be showing and selling this Saturday during the ninth annual Art on the Street event in the downtown, which is co-hosted by the Downtown Guelph Business Association and the Guelph Arts Council. Sheffield makes both indoor and outdoor art pieces. The wall hanging that he’s holding is made from forged steel and recycled copper and is meant to be hung either indoors or outdoors. He’ll be one of many artists with booths along Quebec Street from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 16.

It’s art to the fore in downtown core

Scores of artists will showcase their works along a downtown street this Saturday during the ninth annual Art on the Street art exhibition and sale.

The free event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 16 will see temporary open-air booths lining both sides of Quebec Street.

“Side by side, established and emerging artists sell their work directly to the public,” said a news release, describing the event as “a beautiful opportunity to meet painters, potters, blacksmiths, jewellers, glass blowers, textile artists, photographers and more to take home a piece of Guelph’s creative culture.”

Throughout the day, musicians will serenade artists and visiting crowds alike. A “sonic playground” and the Guelph School of Art can be found in the Acts of Art children’s area in St. George’s Square.

Art on the Street, a juried showcase of contemporary fine art and crafts, is co-hosted by the Downtown Guelph Business Association and the Guelph Arts Council.

“The event has grown in both calibre of artist and scale to become Guelph’s largest open-air art exhibition and sale,” the release said.

Art, music in the alley

Not far from Quebec Street, a downtown cafe has organized a mural-painting event on Saturday that it has dubbed “Art in the Alley.”

In the licensed back patio of the Red Brick Cafe at 8 Douglas St., local artist Candace Sepulis will be painting a large 8′x13′ mural for the cafe. The 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 16 event will give people a chance to meet the artist, watch her paint and perhaps buy some of her wares, including note cards and art prints, while enjoying a beverage at the cafe, a news release said.

Sepulis is known for her 2009 Downtown Guelph recycled banner bags, and her work also appears on the 2011 Guelph Jazz Festival poster as well as current street banners in downtown Guelph, the release said.

As well, the Red Brick Cafe is hosting a free concert in the alley behind the cafe from 4-11 p.m. on Saturday July 16, featuring Cuff the Duke, Donovan Woods and other musicians.

The cafe will remain open and the patio will act as a beer garden for the concert, the release said.
