Lots happening on Family Day in Guelph

Museum, Market Square, Art Centre and U of G
The Guelph Civic Museum is offering activities both inside and outside with its RBC Family Heritage Day from 1 to 5 p.m., including ice cube building blocks, snowman target practice, a photo booth, music, historic presentation, crafts and refreshments.
The highlight of the event will be a “battle of the chain saws” ice carving demonstration starting at 2 p.m., with the final battle at 3:30 p.m., a news release said.
Admission to the museum is free for this event.
Also downtown, the Market Square skating rink will be open, with RBC sponsoring a Family Heritage Day skate with free hot chocolate and cookies from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free skating venue will be open for its usual hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Meanwhile, on the University of Guelph campus, the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre will celebrate a “Funky Family Day” with a concert by The Funky Mamas.
The art gallery will be holding an open house that day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the popular local children’s band set to perform at 2 p.m.
The event is free, but limited advanced tickets are available through the art centre, 358 Gordon St., or at The Bookshelf on Quebec Street. For more information, contact Aidan Ware at 519-837-0010 or aware@msac.ca.
Performance centre hopping
Jumping castles, carnival games, climbing walls and other indoor fun will be on offer during Family Fun Day at the Royal Distributing Athletic Performance Centre.
The Marden facility is hosting the day of family-friendly activities for Family Day on Feb. 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In addition to lots of fun activities for kids, there will also be information booths and hot dogs and pizza for sale at the site. There is an admission fee, with proceeds from the event to support the Ariss and District Lions Club. For more information, visit www.get.onca/fieldhouse.
Jesuit Centre orchard renewal
The Ignatius Jesuit Centre is inviting the community to celebrate Family Day at its orchard renewal ceremony on Feb. 18 at 2 p.m.
The original apple orchard on the west side of Highway 6 has provided fruit for many years, but has run its life cycle and the trees will be removed this winter, a news release said.
The Orchard Renewal event will be held to thank the trees and land, and to honour the experiences the orchard provided and those who worked with the orchard, it said.
The family-friendly event will begin at the northwest corners of the orchard, just north of Guelph. There will be warm beverages at Loyola House following the outdoor ceremony.
Ignatius Farm has also recently issued a request for proposals for an individual or group to implement a new model of orchard growing within the younger orchard. Proposals will be received for entrepreneurial, research and educational activities, the release said. Details at ignatiusguelph.ca.
