Museum hosts Victorian era family garden party Thursday

Children  will be having fun the old-fashioned way when McCrae House hosts its Victorian era-inspired Family Garden Party on Aug. 14.
The party, which takes place from 1 to 4 p.m., highlights a once popular pastime in the gardens surrounding the historic Water Street home.
The event will be a chance to learn about Victorian etiquette with costumed experts, and to try out some 19th century games, including croquet, horseshoes, beanbag toss, stilt walking and potato sack races, a news release said.
The event will also feature a performance by Victoria Ruth the Magician at 2 p.m. and Pandora’s Sox puppet shows at 1 and 3 p.m.
The Children’s Art Factory will be on site with an activity centre, The Canadian Embroiderers Guild of Guelph will also be there to help kids make sock puppets they can play with in small puppet theatres.
And of course, no garden party would be complete without refreshments – which will include tea and lemonade, the release said.
There is a per-person admission fee, but the event is free for Guelph Museums members. For info, call 519-836-1482 or visit
