Relay event for MS

The first ever Val Bremner Memorial MS Summer Relay will take place Aug. 9 at Ponsonby Recreation Park. The relay hopes to attract more than 250 cyclists and runners.
The route begins at the park and will take participants along Wellington County roads and the Grand River. Runners will have the option of a five- or 10-km route. Cyclists can choose between 50 or 100 km.
After the route, participants will come back to the park. There will be music, drinks, silent auctions, prizes and food trucks to celebrate the life of Val Bremner. Val was a mother, daughter, wife and young woman with a bright future ahead of her, said a news release. After being diagnosed with an aggressive strain of multiple sclerosis, she made the most of her life and inspired those around her. Her long-time friend, Paul Richardson of Guelph, created the event in her memory.
Organizers are encouraging participants to show up 1.5 hours before their event to sign in. The day begins with the 100-km cycle at 9 a.m., followed by the 50-km cycle at 11 a.m. The 10-km run is at noon and the 5-km run is at 1 p.m.  To register, participants must raise a minimum of $250. Proceeds from the event will fund Canadian-led research and support services for MS.
