Relay for Life brings in healthy returns

Hundreds of people braved the cold and went without sleep last Friday night to show support and to raise thousands of dollars for the fight against cancer.
“The unofficial total is $75,000, but there’s still money coming in,” said Doug Wilkinson, chair of this year’s local Relay for Life.
The annual relay is a fundraiser that sees teams walking laps of the track at Guelph Lake Conservation Area throughout the night from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following day.
Although participants enjoyed a rain-free event this year, Mother Nature was less than kind. “It was a bit of a cold night, but everybody toughed it out,” said Wilkinson.
In total, 26 teams took part – a number that was down a bit from last year due to other local Relay for Life events, he said.
But whether the teams were taking part in a school Relay for Life event or in the city-wide event, the money raised will support the Canadian Cancer Society.
Funds support local programs and services for cancer patients and their families, and also support cancer research programs nationwide.
