Residents to rescue of Yule program

In a matter of days, generous community members came forward to adopt the 60 families still waiting to be matched with donors through the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington’s Adopt-A-Family program.
“The response from the community when we issued our call for donors illustrated the kindness in our community. This is what the holiday season is all about,” Children’s Foundation executive director Glenna Banda said in a news release.
The Adopt-A-Family program provides gifts and food vouchers to families in need of assistance during the holiday season.
This year, demand for the program had jumped to more than 780 families, and, as of Dec. 6, 60 of those families were still waiting for donors. But once word got out about the need, the community responded, the release said.
Donors who had already adopted, signed up to take on a second family, and businesses donated and challenged their clients to match their donations, it said. People who hadn’t originally budgeted to donate also found a way to squeeze it in.
“Donors have helped families who have had a tough year remember what joy and hope feels like,” said Banda.
