Seniors association series on staying healthy at home

The Guelph Wellington Seniors Association begins its winter education series, with the theme “Staying Safe and Healthy at Home,” on Wednesday Feb. 6.
The series of free presentations are offered throughout February and March at the Evergreen Seniors Community Centre, 683 Woolwich St., and people who don’t belong to the seniors association are welcome to attend, a news release said.
The following is a list of the events in the series:
• Feb. 6  – “Be Prepared for Fire” is geared toward older adults, covering fire safety in the home, escape planning and devices that could save your life, presented by fire prevention officer Craig Bottomley.
• Feb. 13 – “Emergency Medical Services – More than a ride to the hospital” covers the role of the paramedic, when to call 9-1-1, popular misconceptions, blood pressure and prescription monitoring, with primary care paramedic Kevin Steinke.
• Feb. 20 – “Too Fit to Fracture” is an update on recommendations and new research directions for physical activity, presented by kinesiology professor Lora Giangregorio.
• March 6 – “Medication Safety for Older Adults” will help people learn to maximize the benefits of medications while minimizing the risks, presented by pharmacist Robert Chin.
• March 20 – “Turn Your Back On Falls” will highlight preventative measures for lifestyle and environment to be safe and minimize fall risk, and “Quality of Life Begins with Safety and Comfort” will feature a display of assistive devices that can help people stay safe in their homes, presented by physiotherapist Karla Andrews and Action Mobility owner Diane Montgomery.
• March 27 – “Why We Fall, and What You Can Do To Reduce Your Risk” covers why falls increase as people age and practical tips for reducing the risk of falling, with York University associate dean William Gage.
