Seniors help seniors

Federal Minister of State for Seniors Alice Wong chats with local folks at Immigrant Services, paid a visit to Guelph last Thursday to announce funding for a local program to help address elder abuse and related issues that put seniors at risk. “It’s only by talking about it and bringing it out into the open that we’ll solve the problem,” Wong told a room full of people on hand for the announcement. “Unfortunately, too many older people suffer in silence because they are too afraid.” Wong brought news of $247,000 in funding for Phase 3 of Immigrant Services’ Project Wisdom, an initiative created by seniors to help seniors by raising awareness of elder abuse in the community and to build the capacity of local organizations to provide services to culturally diverse seniors. “Older people need to know they have friends and allies that can help,” said Wong.
