Suicide risk forum topic

The community’s capacity to address suicide risk will be discussed during the 13th annual Mayor’s Initiative for World Mental Health Day.
The event, which is scheduled to take place Wednesday Oct. 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at city hall, will focus on two new resources in the local community that help strengthen the capacity to address suicide risk, a news release said.
Allan Strong, of Self-Help Alliance, will give an overview of Skills for Safer Living, a 20-week suicide intervention skills development group. The group is designed for people who have made recurrent suicide attempts, and it is followed by a peer support group, the release said.
Strong will also present video testimonials from people who have taken part in the group.
The Suicide Intervention Community Training Team’s Laura McCormack will be presenting on Caring Through Connection, a new locally produced video that highlights the power and importance of connecting with a caring person, the release said.
An open question period with those who were part of the video will follow.
The Mayor’s Initiative is sponsored by Trellis Mental Health and Developmental Services, Canadian Mental Health Association Grand River Branch, Homewood Health Centre, Self Help Alliance, Community Torchlight Distress Centre of Wellington/Dufferin, and Family Counselling Support Services.
All members of the community are welcome.
