Apartment evacuation due to fire

Residents of a Speedvale Avenue apartment building were kept out of their homes for a couple of hours in the early morning on Friday due to an apartment fire on the sixth floor.
Firefighters were called to the scene around 12:30 a.m. and arrived to find the sixth floor hallway filled with smoke from a fire in the bedroom of one of the apartments. The fire was quickly extinguished, but there was extensive fire, smoke and water damage to the apartment, a news release said.
Smoke had to be evacuated from the hallway, the apartment where the fire started and from a couple of units above that apartment, it said. One resident from the apartment was also taken to hospital with a condition unrelated to the fire, it said.
Residents of the building were displaced for a couple of hours, but were eventually allowed to return to their apartments.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
