The 13th annual Women of Distinction awards gala is being heralded as a night of inspiration as the efforts of 33 local women to improve their community were celebrated.
While 10 women were selected to win awards, one in each category, organizers said each nominee is deserving of recognition.
"Each one of the 33 nominees this year deserves to be honoured and celebrated for the work they do in our community," Patricia Crummey, supervisor of development and communications for the YMCA-YWCA of Guelph and the organizer of the event, said in a news release. "It has been a remarkable experience getting to know the ladies and their stories. I hope that everyone there . . . walked out with a renewed spirit to give back to the community."
The awards were handed out at the River Run Centre on May 8.
It's one of the largest fundraisers held by the Y each year. Proceeds support the Teenage Parents Program, which offers education and support to young parents.
