An international association of professional photographers has recognized photographer and former Guelphite Roel Dixon-Mahatoo, owner of Stratford, Ont.-based Roel Photography, with its studio-of-the-month honour. The studio is the third Canadian studio ever recognized by Wedding and Portrait Photographers International, which has more than 30,000 member portrait, commercial, lifestyle and fine art studios in 30 countries, said a news release. Dixon-Mahatoo grew up in Guelph and attended Waverley Drive school and John F. Ross high school before moving to Sarnia. He is a professional engineer with an Honours B.A.Sc. from the University of Waterloo. Having worked first as an engineer with IBM and Nortel, and then as an executive with NYNEX (now Verizon Communications) and KPMG, Dixon-Mahatoo changed careers in the late 1990s to follow his muse, said the release. Acclaimed for the extraordinary passion he brings to his work, he is widely acknowledged for his high standards and innovative approach. He is also the author of Africa: Beginning a Journey, a coffee table book of wildlife images produced in partnership with Plan Canada.
