With Canadian university and college sporting seasons taking a break in their schedules, here is how some local student athletes are faring at various schools.

•••

Here in the OUA, the University of Guelph men’s basketball Gryphons have three Guelph players, two of them rookies.

• Rookie Drew Morris (Bishop Macdonell) is averaging 5.9 points a game for the 3-5 Gryphons and is seeing an average of 17.9 minutes of floor time. He’s 14- for-29 shooting, 5-for-11 from three-point land and 8- for-11 from the charity stripe. He also has 15 rebounds.

• Rookie Adrian Achonwa (Centennial) is averaging 4.2 points a game, 13.2 minutes played and is 10-for-17 shooting. He’s 3-for-5 from beyond the arc and 2-for-5 from the line. He has eight rebounds.

• Second-year guard Dan McCarthy (Centennial), is third on Guelph in scoring with an average of 15.2 points per game. He’s playing an average of 28.7 minutes, is 26-for-61 shooting, 10-for-27 in three-point attempts and has 22 rebounds.

• Sophomore Jasmine Douglas (John F. Ross)leads the University of Guelph women’s hoops Gryphons in a host of statistical categories, among them points per game average, rebounds, blocks and assists. She is averaging 14.0 points a game for t h e Gryphons, has 79 rebounds in the eight games played, and has 12 blocks and 14 assists.

Douglas is averaging a team-high 30.9 minutes played for the 1-7 squad.

• Rookie Jaime Green (Our Lady of Lourdes) has 10 rebounds in six games for the Gryphons. She’s 4-for-6 from the free throw line, 3- for-13 from the field and 1- for-3 from beyond the three-point line.

• Jade Fair (Guelph CVI) is playing an average of five minutes a game for the Ottawa basketball Gee-Gees. The third-year player is 4- for-9 shooting.

• In his first season with Laurentian, cager Rob McMurray (John F. Ross) is averaging 5.2 minutes of court time a game and is 3- for-9 shooting, for six points, and he has six rebounds.

• Evan Schwantz (Centennial), is averaging 10.1 minutes played a game for the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks and 2.6 points per game. The second-year Hawk is 8-for-25 shooting and 5-for-10 from the line.

• Rookie Robert Dewar, who attended John F. Ross then went on to the National Elite Development Academy in Hamilton, leads the University of Alberta Golden Bears in blocks with 12.

He’s 14-for-31 shooting for the Bears, who are 7-10 overall and 5-5 in conference play. Dewar is averaging 12.5 minutes played, has 28 rebounds and is 11-for-14 from the free-throw line.

• Scott Jaspers-Gayer (GCVI) is averaging 10.8 points a game for the Cape Breton Capers basketball team. He is 21-for-33 from the field and 12-for-16 from the free throw line.

• In women’s OUA hockey, Centennial CVI grad Brittany McHaffie, a rookie at Qu e e n’s , has five goals and seven assists in 15 games.

• Brittany’s twin sister and teammate, Morgan, also a Centennial grad, has six goals and three assists in 15 games played.

• Over at Western, Chantal Morais (Bishop Macdonell) has nine goals and five assists in 16 games for the Mustangs.

• Playing for their hometown Gryphons, sophomore Tamara Bell (Centennial) has seven goals and four assists in 14 games and rookie Kandace Charbonneau (Our Lady or Lourdes) has four assists in 10 games.

• In Ontario Colleges Athletic Association basketball, Tanner Lane (Bishop Macdonell) is averaging 12.33 points per game in his rookie season for Mohawk.

The 4-5 team has three local rookies on it. Teammate Travin Cain (Centennial) is averaging 5.44 points per game for Mohawk while Jani Hnilica (John F. Ross) had a high ankle sprain early in the year that has put him on the shelf for the better part of eight weeks, said Mohawk coach Brian Jonker.

• Fourth-year player Chris Karkoulas (Centennial) is averaging 7.1 points a game for Niagara (4-4).

• Over at Georgian, fifth-year player Brad Taylor (GCVI) is averaging 4.5 points a game for the 4-6 squad.

• For 8-1 Humber, rookie Mac Samuels (GCVI) is averaging 4.29 points a game.

Humber includes former Guelph Gryphons star J. R. Bailey. He’s putting up 11.89 points a game on average.

In college volleyball, Guelph’s Helena Stronks (Woodland Christian) is 10th in the OCAA West in points-per-game average with 2.88 for Redeemer.

The fourth-year player has played 10 matches, 33 of the team’s 34 games, and has 95 points.

• Rookie Jenna Kuehni (Centennial) has 10 kills and 15 points in six matches played for Nipissing, who at 10-1 lead the OCAA.

• Kalie Gies (GCVI) has 15 points from three matches for Humber, which has a 9-1 record. Gies is a former University of Guelph volleyball Gryphon.

• On the men’s side, Guelph’s Gerard Stronks (Woodland Christian) is averaging 2.32 points a game for Algonquin. He has played in nine matches, 25 games, and has 44 kills.
