City hall layoffs ‘a moving target’

City hall is still dealing with the impact of job losses that were part of the 2010 city operating budget approved by council in December, with union employees issued layoff notices continuing to bump employees with less seniority.
“Not all the bumping has been finalized,” said Mark Amorosi, the city’s director of human resources.
Council decided to eliminate the full-time equivalent of 29 positions to save $1.5 million in 2010. Most of these positions were vacant, but about eight people ended up being let go, Amorosi said. This number was fewer than the original estimate that 12 people would lose their jobs, he said, because there were some resignations around the time the budget was set.
“It was a bit of a moving target” to gauge how many people would need to be let go, he said in an interview.
