Documentary probes Haiti’s past

A documentary about political events that have shaped Haiti and helped make the aftermath of the recent earthquake so devastating will be screened at The Bookshelf Cinema on Saturday March 6.

Admission to the 1 p. m. screening, which is aimed at raising awareness rather than funds, will be on a pay-what-you-can basis and no one will be turned away for lack of funds, a news release said. The event will include a discussion of how Haitians can be supported in their attempts to rebuild their country. Founders of the national Canada Haiti Action Network, Jean Saint-Vil and Kevin Skerrett from Ottawa, will be present.

The film titled “Aristide and the Endless Revolution” includes interviews with Jean-Bertrand Aristide, the democratically elected Haitian president who was taken against his will from Haiti by Americans in 2004, the release said.

“This award-winning documentary exposes the tangled web of hope, deceit and political violence that has brought the world’s first black republic to its knees,” it said.

The screening is hosted by Haiti Action Guelph, the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the University of Guelph’s Critical Knowledge Collective.
