“It will be the one-stop shop that our customers have been asking for and that they enjoy,” said Wal-Mart spokesperson Felicia Fefer.
Fefer said the public will be invited to a grand opening event when the 50,000-sq.-ft. addition opens, but she couldn’t say when it will open. “All I can say at this time is early spring,” she said.
The addition to the existing 135,000-sq.-ft. store will convert the local Wal-Mart from a “discount store” to a “supercentre,” she said. It will be the company’s 86th supercentre, joining others in Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. In all, Wal-Mart now has 317 stores in Canada, she said in an interview.
The addition will allow Wal-Mart to add fresh offerings, including fresh produce, meats, deli items and bakery goods, to the dry grocery items now sold in the store, Fefer said. “All of the food, from dry grocery to fresh, will be in one area of the store.”
The addition will create about 100 new jobs, boosting employment at the local Wal-Mart to about 300, she said.
