Barbecue launches United Way campaign

The United Way of Guelph Wellington Dufferin will kick off its 2014 fundraising campaign on Sept. 10 with a community barbecue at Market Square on Carden Street.
The kick-off event, which will feature live music with the Black Water Trio, promises to include a “big announcement” at noon with a special presentation by the Guelph Police Service, a news release said. The event typically includes the announcement of this year’s fundraising goal.
Former Guelph Police chief Bryan Larkin is this year’s United Way campaign chair. He will be joined at the event by local United Way executive director Ken Dardano, Guelph mayor Karen Farbridge, members of the Guelph Police Service and United Way campaign cabinet and volunteers.
The organization’s annual multi-million-dollar campaign supports more than 85 social service programs across Guelph and Wellington and Dufferin counties.
The kick-off, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will celebrate the contributions of the thousands of donors and volunteers who make these programs possible.
