City speeds up speed limit sign postings

City hall is moving ahead quickly with putting lower speed limits into effect near the city’s elementary schools.
The city’s tender for supplying equipment for the new speed zones closes this Wednesday. It will be installed as it’s received by the city.
“Rather than wait until all signage is in inventory before proceeding, staff plan to install materials as they arrive,” says a new city staff report. “This will accelerate the creation of these new zones, permitting maximum benefit during the current school year.”
In December, council approved spending $210,000 this year on creating the school speed zones – 40 km/h “time of day” speed zones next to schools on arterial roads, and 30 km/h speed zones to be in effect at all times near schools located on all other kinds of roads.
The “time of day” speed zone near arterial roads will be in effect from 8-9 a.m. and 3-4 p.m. during the school year.
