Costco eyes west end

The Costco membership warehouse chain could be coming to a commercial site not far from the west end Zehrs.
Costco is named in a new planning application at city hall for rezoning of 32 acres of land for a multi-building commercial development west of Elmira Road and north of Paisley Road. A 143,000-sq.-ft. Costco big box store and an accessory gas bar would go in the site’s middle section.
The site on the city’s western border is where a farmhouse, occupied by the Mitchell pioneer family from 1840 to 2004, was demolished after city council voted 7-6 in 2005 to grant Armel’s request for a demolition permit for the Mitchell farmhouse.
Costco had been mooted as a likely big box tenant of a multi-use development slated for the 54-acre former Lafarge quarry site between Paisley Road and Waterloo Avenue, just east of the Hanlon Expressway. The city is doing an environmental assessment of an underpass that would need to be built under the CN line south of Paisley Road as part of the new road connection for this development.
Another big box tenant once mooted for Silvercreek (Guelph) Developments Ltd.’s development on the former Lafarge site was the Leon’s furniture chain. Leon’s has since located at the nearby Willow West Mall.
