Fewer shelters in square

People passing through St. George’s Square can expect to see fewer places to take cover from the elements when work on the square wraps up this month.
Along with the current construction work going on in the square, the city will be removing some of its bus shelters so there are no longer shelters where platforms are not being used, said Michael Anders, general manager of community connectivity and transit.
“With our hub operations moving from the square to Guelph Central Station, there’s significantly less bus traffic going through the square,” he said of the reason for removing the shelters.
Guelph Transit’s main transfer point was moved to the Carden Street hub in May, but some bus routes still make their way through the square, so some shelters will stay. “The shelters will match the level of bus traffic,” said Anders.
Platforms that are no longer being used will no longer have shelters, he said.
Earlier this year, the square gained additional parking spaces on the street in areas where buses are no longer stopping.
