Grade 4 immersion students at Victory will stay

Victory school, which will lose its Grade 5 and 6 French immersion students this fall, can retain its FI students in Grade 4 for the coming school year, the Upper Grand District School Board has confirmed.
The school will be able to take Grade 4 FI students during the 2014-15 school year without exceeding its limit of three portables, said a board news release issued after the board’s last monthly meeting.
Over the protests of many Victory parents, the board decided in late 2012 that Victory’s Grade 5 and 6 French immersion students would be sent to King George school starting in September 2014. The board originally planned to send Grade 4, 5 and 6 FI students from Victory to King George due to potential overcrowding at Victory. It ended up deciding to evaluate, on a year-by-year basis, whether Victory could keep taking Grade 4 FI students.
Victory also teaches JK-6 students in the regular English program. They will remain. Its FI students have far outnumbered its regular-track students.
