Guelph man was pivotal in Trees for Tots program

Guelph’s Terry Jay will be remembered as a man who gave back to his community.
The 23-year-old father of three died Friday evening in an accident at Pearson International Airport, where he was working on snow removal.
Police say he was trapped under snow-removal equipment, but would provide few other details, noting that the incident is being investigated by the Ministry of Labour.
Jay ran his own business in Guelph, Terry’s Tree Removal, which played an instrumental role in a local fundraiser benefiting children.
“Trees for Tots would not have happened without Terry’s insight,” said Children’s Foundation of Guelph Wellington executive director Glenna Banda.
Jay played a significant role in planning the fundraiser, which involved volunteers collecting old Christmas trees, she said. He donated his time and wood chipping trucks to help on the day of the pickup.
Jay had been helped out through the Children’s Foundation’s Adopt-A-Family program during a difficult financial time, and “he had been looking for a way to give back,” said Banda in an email.
“He brought along his family to help and gave so much of his time to the event,” she said. “You could see the pride and accomplishment in his eyes at the end of the day.”
Jay, who leaves behind wife Sara Jay and children Angel, Cameron and Natasha, is remembered in his obituary as a man who “put others’ needs ahead of himself,” and “worked hard to create a life for his family.”
A visitation will be held Friday Feb. 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Hart Chapel at Gilbert and MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, 1099 Gordon St. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Saturday Feb. 15 at 11 a.m.
A trust fund is being set up for the family, and donations will be accepted as expressions of sympathy. Details will be posted on the funeral home’s website, http://bit.ly/LQmct0, when they are available. Or for more information, call the funeral home at 519-821-5077.
