Hip still on, two other events off due to storm

A little bad weather will not stop the Hip from playing tonight at the Sleeman Centre, but it will be keeping the book lovers and comedian Mike Mandel at home.

The Guelph Public Library’s An Evening for Book Lovers fundraising event has been postponed from Feb. 8 to Feb. 15 due to a snowstorm. Meanwhile, the city has announced that tonight’s sold-out Tragically Hip concert will go ahead as planned, but tonight’s Mike Mandel comedy show at the River Run Centre has been cancelled.

“Mike Mandel was looking forward to his appearance in Guelph this evening, but felt that it was unsafe to make the drive in from out-of-town due to the weather conditions,” manager of cultural development Ella Pauls said in a news release.

The box office staff will contact everyone who has purchased tickets to arrange refunds, the release said.

Somehow, the Hip, along with special guests the Arkells, are expected to make their concert tonight.

“The show set up is progressing well and we are anticipating a fabulous show this evening,” Sleeman Centre facility manager Rich Grau said in a news release.

The weather is expected to improve throughout the day, Guelph Transit buses are operating, and no ticket refunds will be issued, it said.

Door for the concert event, which features special guest Arkells, will open at 7 p.m. with the concert starting at 8 p.m.

Fans still looking to get their hands on tickets may be able to get them after 1 p.m. when some extras may be released to the public, it said.

Fans can visit or call the Sleeman Centre box office at 519-837-5630.

Meanwhile, the library’s fundraiser will follow the same format as previously planned, but one week later.

The event will be held at the Italian Canadian Club, 135 Ferguson St., with doors opening at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m.
