Hot wheels thieves like to steal

Police are warning SUV and pickup truck drivers to be extra careful about locking up their vehicles after three trucks were stolen in January.
The recent thefts are in addition to last year’s total of 32 pickups or SUVs stolen and nine attempted thefts in Guelph. Of the 32 stolen, only 14 were recovered, a news release said.
Thieves appear to be targeting GM models, as half of last year’s thefts were GMs, it said. Most thefts took place between 2 and 10:30 p.m., Monday to Thursday, it said.  The vehicles have been taken from a variety of sites, including factories, hotels, theatres, shopping centres and the university, it said.
The following is a list of tips from police for protecting your vehicle:
• Always roll up the windows, lock the doors and pocket the key.
• Never leave a vehicle unattended while it is running.
• If you have a garage, use it and lock the door and the vehicle.
• Never leave car keys in plain view or in an easily accessible area.
• Keep vehicle registration and proof of insurance on you; don’t leave these documents in your glove compartment.
• Always park in a well-lit area.
• Never leave valuables in full view.
• Give only your ignition key to a parking lot attendant; keep other keys with you.
