House fire on William Street

Guelph Fire Prevention is investigating a fire that happened Sunday afternoon at a home on William Street.
Firefighters from three stations responded to the house fire just before 4 p.m. They arrived to find smoke coming from the garage and main floor of the house, a news release said.
When firefighters entered the home, they encountered heavy smoke and fire. The fire had started in the basement and had extended to the main level, the release said.
No one was at home at the time of the fire, which was quickly extinguished with no injuries to firefighters, it said.
The cause of the fire and an estimate of the damage are under investigation.
