Interactive workshop eyes core streets, public places

The city is looking for public input about the future of downtown streets and public spaces at an interactive workshop this Wednesday evening.
The 6-9 p.m. March 6 workshop at city hall will include a walking tour.
The city wants to develop a detailed vision of community and local business needs for the downtown area’s parks, squares and streets. The discussion will help shape short- and long-term activities and projects for these spaces, a news release said.
“Incorporating these needs into Guelph’s future design will allow the downtown’s public spaces to play an even greater role in energizing the city’s civic heart and local economy,” Ian Panabaker, the city’s corporate manager of downtown renewal, said in the release.
Project for Public Spaces, an internationally known firm whose specialty is revitalizing public spaces, will facilitate the March 6 workshop.
Input received at the workshop will lead to short-term projects and provide direction for future capital projects, including road reconstructions in the downtown core and the long-term revitalization of St. George’s Square, the release said.
People interested in attending are asked to RSVP by contacting Michelle Mercier at 519-822-1260, ext. 2459, or by email at downtownplan@guelph.ca.
