Just in time for back-to-school, Guelph Transit riders in the south end can expect some new routes and schedules going into effect.
Changes to transit service in the south end, which go into effect Sept. 2, include an increase in frequency on the University Express routes 50, 57 and 58 to 15- minute service. But the changes are not all catered to the University of Guelph students, said Guelph Transit general manager Michael Anders.
“We’re making some really positive changes for both residents and students,” he said.
The changes, which also include some tweaks in the downtown, are in response to feedback from residents and transit riders, he said. They include:
• Extension of Route 5 Gordon from the University Centre to Guelph Central Station, so riders can travel from the south end to the downtown on one bus, a news release said.
• A new Route 16 Southgate serving south end residents and businesses.
• Minor schedule adjustments to Route 2B.
• Platform changes at Guelph Central Station and the University Centre.
• A new Route 56 Victoria Express, travelling on Victoria Road southbound from the University Centre.
“We’re listening and responding to riders’ concerns, and these updated routes will improve service in Guelph’s growing south end,” said Anders in the release.
Platform changes are based on months of observing transfer patterns at the two hubs, the release said.
In addition to the platform and route changes, fare increases will be implemented on Sept. 1, as approved by city council in January, it said.
Tickets and passes will increase by three to four per cent, while cash fares will remain at $3.

People using the industrial runs should not be facing a fare hike,we should be getting discounted fares for the lack of service we receive.
