New Guelph General Hospital CEO hails from across town

St. Joseph’s Health Centre president Marianne Walker is making the move across town to Guelph General Hospital.
“We are exceptionally pleased to announce that Marianne Walker will be the new president and CEO of Guelph General Hospital, beginning Sept. 8,” Guelph General Hospital board chair John Core said in a news release.
Walker is currently president of St. Joe’s and senior vice-president of the St. Joseph’s Health System.
“It’s interesting that after a comprehensive, national search with many strong candidates from across the country, the search committee’s unanimous first choice was right here in our community,” Core said.
Walker has executive leadership experience in acute care, rehabilitation, complex continuing care, long-term care and community support services, the release said.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to join the Guelph General team that is committed to quality care and patient safety,” Walker said in the release.
“Guelph General has grown a strong reputation for excellence through its commitment to outstanding care and service, reflected most recently by its exemplary standing from Accreditation Canada. I’m fortunate to continue to work with our community partners to meet the health care needs of our community.”
Walker is a nurse who became CEO of St. Joe’s in 2003. Before that, she held senior roles at Cambridge Memorial Hospital. She will replace current Guelph General president and CEO Richard Ernst, who is retiring.
Meanwhile, St. Joe’s will begin the process to find its new CEO.
St. Joe’s board of trustees chair Cindy Kinnon and St. Joseph’s Health System president and CEO Kevin Smith released the following statement to staff:
“Marianne will be missed by staff, participants, residents and patients. We wish her well in her new role. The Board of Trustees and SJHS leadership will immediately begin a process to identify St. Joseph’s next leader.”
