Parking proposals far-reaching

These are the seven changes being proposed by city staff to make the city’s parking operation self-sustaining, along with the projected additional revenue over 20 years for each change. The additional revenue would total $59.7 million over 20 years.
• paid on-street parking in the downtown – $17.3 million
• full cost recovery from city employees for parking spaces they use – $13.7 million
• increases in permit, hourly and Saturday parking rates – $10.1 million
• downtown parking fines moved from the city’s bylaw to its parking operations – $6.6 million
• a pay & display system at all parking lots, eliminating staffed parkades – $5.8 million
• a permit program in neighbourhoods surrounding the downtown for street parking by both residents and non-residents of those streets – $3.2 million
• a new levy on Urban Growth Centre property owners – $3.1 million.
