Police remind motorists new school speed limits in effect

With kids heading back to school in just one week, the Guelph Police Service is reminding drivers of the reduced speed limits around school zones.
The new speed limits – of 40 km/h and 30 km/h on arterial roads and neighbourhood streets respectively – went in to effect across Guelph last April. The 30-km/h speed limits are in effect at all times, whereas the 40-km/h limits are enforced only on school days from 8 to 9 a.m. and from 3 to 4 p.m.
“Although the 30-km/h zones have been in effect all summer and are 24/7, the risk of personal injury or property damage increases when kids are coming and going to school, due to increased congestion,” a Guelph Police news release said.
“Ultimately, as drivers we must always be aware of our surroundings, including area speed changes, at all times,” it said.
