Police seek witnesses to fatal crash

Police are investigating the circumstances of a fatal car crash that happened on Victoria Road on Sunday afternoon.
A 47-year-old Guelph man was declared dead at the scene after his car hit an abutment of the train bridge between Elizabeth Street and Grange Road. The car – a 2007 Honda Accord – came to rest against an iron fence on the west side of Victoria Road.
The force of the collision demolished the Honda and severed a section of the iron fence from its footings, a news release said.
There were no other vehicles involved in the collision, and the man was the car’s only occupant, it said.
The man’s name has not been released, pending notification of his next of kin. Victoria Road was closed for nearly eight hours while collision investigators collected evidence from the scene.
Investigators are asking for the public’s assistance and wish to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the events leading up to the crash. Call Cont. Ian Smith at 519-824-1212, ext. 214.
