Waste collection operator Dave Riggs stands before the hundreds of waste carts arriving at the Guelph Waste Resource Innovation Centre as the city gets ready to deliver the new bins to the first 15,000 households starting next week. Riggs will eventually be driving one of the automated trucks that will pick up Guelph’s curbside waste in these carts. The drivers are being trained in phases, as are residents. The system is being phased in over three years, with the first one-third of the city making the switch to the carts this fall.
About 15,000 households are scheduled to get their green, blue and grey waste carts over the coming weeks, as the city begins phasing in its new waste cart collection system.
Earlier, these households had the option to choose their blue and grey cart sizes from four options, and the carts will be delivered according to their size and colour.
Residents should eventually receive all three carts and a food scraps container, but they shouldn’t expect to get them all on the same delivery, and they shouldn’t panic if they don’t get their carts on the same day as their neighbours, said manager of integrated services with Solid Waste Services Heather Connell. However, if a household does not receive all its carts by Nov. 2, contact Solid Waste at 519-767-0598 or waste@guelph.ca.
Carts will be collected on the same day of the week as bags have been, but recyclables will no longer be collected every week. While organics in green carts are picked up weekly, the grey carts for garbage and the blue carts for recyclables will be collected on alternating weeks.
Before collection begins on the week of Nov. 5, residents should expect to find door-hangers on their door with all the information they need.
