Second degree murder charge

Police have charged a man with second degree murder in relation to the death of his baby boy nearly two years ago.
The investigation started on the morning of Aug. 21, 2012, when police, paramedics and firefighters went to an address on Julia Drive in response to a report of a seven-week-old baby who had no vital signs.
First responders were able to revive the infant, who was then taken to Guelph General Hospital and subsequently airlifted to McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton for treatment. The baby was pronounced dead in hospital the following day, a news release said. Police say at the time of the baby’s death, his father was his caregiver. The Guelph Police Service continued to investigate the matter over the next 22 months, and on June 18 of this year an arrest was made.
A 33-year-old Toronto man, formerly of Guelph, was charged. He appeared in bail court Thursday June 19 and was remanded into custody until his next court appearance on July 3 in Guelph.
