St. George’s Square work sees two-week clsoure

The closing of St. George’s Square to traffic for about two weeks starting Monday Aug. 13 is one of two downtown construction projects this month that will result in detours.
Work to St. George’s Square will include removing existing concrete and repaving asphalt. Existing transit shelters will also be removed “to symbolize transforming the square from a transit hub to a functional, community space,” said a city hall news release last week.
The square will be closed to vehicular traffic during the work, and there will be detours around the square for vehicles. Wyndham, Quebec and Douglas streets will be closed to all vehicles at the entrance of the square.
The square will be fenced around the perimeter of the construction zone, and pedestrian walkways will be established. All sidewalks will be open for pedestrian access to all local businesses, the release said.
As well, the city will resurface the intersection of Wyndham and Macdonell streets starting around Monday Aug. 27. This work is expected to take about three days.
Southbound and northbound access into this intersection will be closed to vehicular traffic, with detours provided around the intersection. Macdonell Street will be open to eastbound and westbound traffic under the direction of Guelph Police Services, the release said. All sidewalks will be open for pedestrian access.
During the two short-term construction projects, Guelph Transit will temporarily detour affected transit routes in and out of downtown Guelph. For more information on Guelph Transit changes and detours, visit guelphtransit.ca or contact Guelph Transit at transit@guelph.ca or 519-822-11811.

I think that before the city completely removes all traces of transit at the square they should take an accurate and “honest” poll of transit riders and drivers as well as business owners. Michael Anders only response to my 25 or 30 complaints to him was to tell me that the majority of people like this system.I don’t think he should be making that statement without a poll being taken.Every person I have spoken to hates this system and the hub, they are calling for buses back at the square and the old system back.

Many business owners are complaining about loss of business, transit riders have had the ability to get a coffee, use a bank machine or go to the store between transfers taken away from them. Derek McCaughan and Michael Anders keep questioning whether people are using the system properly, they should realize that they helped design a very inconvenient system that doesn’t work for most people.

I think the city should put the buses back in the square to restore business and convenience for riders and use the vacated space at the hub(which nobody seems to like anyways)as pay parking.
Our city officials keep telling us they are trying to get people out of cars and on to transit and yet they make it more convenient for people in cars to get to the square.

I think everyone affected by the transit changes should get after our city officials and keep after until they have to listen. They do work “for us”,we don’t work for them.
