Student faces arson charge

A man who set his dorm room on fire in a suicide attempt streamed online has been charged with arson.
The 21-year-old University of Guelph student was taken to hospital with serious injuries on Nov. 30 after he lit fire to his room in Dundas Hall, East Residence. The incident was captured on video live-streamed in an online chat room. It ended when Guelph firefighters arrived to put out the fire.
Around 30 other students living in the residence had to be placed in alternative accommodations as a result of the fire. The damage is estimated in the thousands, a news release said.
On Dec. 11, police charged the student – a 21-year-old Orangeville man – with arson with disregard for human life.
