Tough time of year collecting blood

More people are needed to give a very different kind of gift this holiday season. Canadian Blood Service is asking people to “give a holiday miracle” by donating blood during the days around Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
As many donors take holidays or are busy with other activities, collecting blood during the holiday season is a challenge, a news release said.
At the same time, many patients are receiving cancer treatment or life-saving surgery and emergency care. Canadian Blood Services estimates the need for 25,000 people to give blood to meet the needs of hospital patients across Canada this year.
In Guelph, about 288 donors are needed in order to meet this goal, the release said.
“We’d like to thank residents of Guelph who took the time to donate blood so far this holiday season, but we need that generosity to continue through the end of the year,” said Guelph blood donor clinic community development co-ordinator Gina Leyvain in the release.
“As the year draws to an end, do something that embodies the spirit and generosity of the season – give blood. It costs you nothing, and it’ll give someone a holiday miracle.”
The local clinic is open Dec. 24, 26, 29 and 31 from 8 a.m. to noon, and Dec. 27 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. To book an appointment, visit or call 1-888 2 DONATE (1-888-236-6283.
