Two-year deal for firefighters

The salaries of Guelph’s 165 fire department employees are going up by about 5½ per cent over two years in a new contract that runs to the end of 2014.
On Monday, city council voted unanimously behind closed doors to ratify the new collective agreement for the Guelph Professional Firefighters Association’s employees, a news release said. Members of the association ratified the agreement last week.
“We appreciate the dedication and hard work of Guelph’s firefighters and are very pleased to ratify an agreement that is reasonable to these employees and Guelph taxpayers,” Mayor Karen Farbridge said in the release. The previous contract expired at the end of 2012.
The new contract includes these retroactive and future wage increases: 1% on Jan. 1, 2013; 1% on July 1, 2013; 0.75% on Dec 1, 2013; 1.5% on Jan. 1, 2014; 1% on July 1 and 0.2% on Dec. 1.
The deal also includes scheduling efficiencies that will save the city about $142,000 a year, the release said.
