Women to bridge the gap

On International Women’s Day, March 8, local women will join thousands of women around the world in a show of solidarity for peace and women’s equality.
The local women will be taking part in Guelph’s first “Women on the Bridge” event, assembling on the Heffernan Street Bridge to show their support for the women of Afghanistan, Iraq, Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan and other war-torn countries, a news release said.
The Women on the Bridge campaign, now in its third year, started when women from Congo and Rwanda joined together on the bridge connecting their two countries to show that they could build bridges of peace and hope for the future, it said. The action sparked a global movement, and last year they were joined by thousands of people on hundreds of bridges worldwide, it said.
In Guelph, people will gather for the event at 11:30 a.m. at Mitchell Hall in St. George’s church, 99 Woolwich St. They will assemble on the nearby footbridge at noon.
The local event is an initiative of the Zonta Club of Guelph, Women in Crisis, Women’s Health Alliance and the Canadian Federation of University Women Guelph.
