City most remiss removing graffiti

The Heffernan Street footbridge celebrates its 100th anniversary next year.

It’s a shame that this graceful structure is too often the subject of mindless vandalism in the form of graffiti. At the moment there is a lot of it on the bridge supports.

This has been reported to city operations six weeks ago, and several times since, but so far nothing has been done to remove it.

Sadly, there are several spots downtown that feature tags, the most recent a blue daubing on the lovely stonework of La Cucina restaurant.

Unfortunately, the city will not remove graffiti from private property so the cost falls to the business owners.  We are trying to promote the downtown area, but this sort of vandalism only makes the area look shabby.

I have tried to engage councillors in a dialogue about the subject, but on the whole have been met with what I can only call stonewalling, prevarication and apathy.
