Learn from Swedes – no need to commute by car

Re: “City hall officials have raised the spectre of a 10-lane Highway 401 feeding into a six-lane Hanlon Expressway” (Tribune, Feb. 21)
Confronted with congested local highways and faced with the global crisis of climate change, our political leaders’ dismal response is to propose widening the 401 to 10 lanes and the Hanlon to six lanes and to build a new four-lane Highway  7.
Uppsala, Sweden, is a small university/manufacturing city, very much like Guelph; the commuter trip to Stockholm is about the same distance as Guelph-Toronto. A fast, clean, comfortable and inexpensive train makes the trip every 30 minutes (more often during rush hour), stopping at Arlanda, the country’s major airport, en route.
No one needs to commute by car. We should learn from the sensible Swedes.
